Batch of 1986 Stands Tall Against the Calamities

While the entire world is still busy dealing with the death and disaster related to the killer Covid-19 virus, people in the souther part of Bengal, particularly in the delta area of the Sundarbans, were dealt another blow by the devastating cyclone Amphan.
GAABESU itself, as well as numerous batches and groups of alumni have shown their empathy and drive, by stepping up their aid to those whose lives have been completely sent on a downward spiral.

The Batch of 1986 from Bengal Engineering College (IIEST) has been a real trendsetter in their effort to help fight these dual calamities. Below is a brief narration from JAYANTA LAHIRI, from the Batch of 1986, on the tremendous initiative that has provided sustenance to numerous people during these trying times.

Two very debilitating calamities struck Bengal in the past two-three months. From March onwards, the whole of India was put on a strict lock-down to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. This created unimaginable miseries to the daily wage earners, small business men, farm labor and so on. One big risk was the frontline healthcare workers who were getting exposed to the virus without having proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Our endeavor was to supply PPEs directly to the Hospitals to safeguard the medical workers.

To make matters worse there was a deadly cyclone "Amphaan" which had a landfall in the Sundarbans on 20th May-2020 and created havoc in South Bengal specifically Kolkata, 24 pgs, Hooghly etc.

We, the Batch of 1986, did two rounds of fund raising for both the calamities. We could raise money to the tune of Rs 4.75 Lacs, with more than 100 batchmates contributing to this noble cause. Our aim was to distribute to institutes who are in the front-line of the relief work, and to some of these NGOs in which our batchmates are associated with. Below is the list of organizations to whom we disbursed this amount. As a group, BEC86 came together and contributed in our own small way to the crisis in Bengal.
