Obituary for Jyotimay Mazumder

We are sorry to inform you that one of our distinguished alumni Jyotirmay (“Jyoti”) Majumder (1972 Metallurgy) breathed his last on Saturday (April 10th, 2021) afternoon (2.00 pm EST). It is a huge shock to all of us. He was not only a world class researcher at a top US University, but he was always accessible to everyone involved with B E College/IIEST. His association with BEC goes to many generations and during his student days several of his extended family members were also students at our campus. We fondly remember his presence in all alumni meets, passion for improving the curriculum and research in our Metallurgy Program and overall drive to help improving our institutional ranking in the national framework.  In memory of his parents he instituted “Research Award” administered by GAABESU for our undergraduate students.

After graduating from the then B. E. College under Calcutta University, he went to Imperial College, London for higher study. He got his diploma (MS) and Ph.D. in Process Metallurgy from there in 1978. After his graduation from Imperial College, he returned to India and joined BARC as Pool Officer.  However, he did not stay long at BARC and decided to pursue his interest in academics and joined University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a faculty.

Professor Jyoti Mazumder (1951-2021) had a very distinguished career. He was the Robert H. Lurie Professor of Engineering and Director of Center for Laser Aided Intelligent Manufacturing at the University of Michigan. He was a creative inventor, scholar and educator, prolific author, and scientist. He had a special zeal in teaching and research. He leaves behind a long history of excellence.  He was bestowed Distinguished Alumni award from the Department of Metallurgy in 1989 and was given Distinguished Alumni award from our Alma Mater twice. He was an elected member of the USA National Academy of Engineering and foreign fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

His career spanning 41 years (16 years at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaignand 25 years at University Michigan, Ann Arbor) was extraordinary. He was a world-renowned scientist, and published 400 papers, co-authored books on Laser Chemical Vapor Deposition and Laser Materials Processing, held over 25 patents, edited/co-edited 10 books. He is known as a pioneer in Additive Manufacturing. He has taken his research to market by commercializing Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) technology and recently developed in-situ sensors for 3-D printing and welding that have the capability to detect defects, composition and phase transformation.

Other than being recognized by his Alma Mater and Academies of Engineering from USA and India for his academic excellence, he received several awards and honors for his research including, Schawlow Award for seminal contribution to Laser application research from Laser Institute of America in 2003, William T Ennor Award for manufacturing from ASME in 2006, Adams Memorial Membership award from American Welding Society in 2007, Thomas A Edison Patent Award from ASME in 2010 for inventing First closed loop Direct Metal Deposition system, which significantly enhances some aspect of Mechanical Engineering, Distinguished University Innovator Award in 2012 from the University of Michigan. He was awarded as Manufacturing Engineer of the Year (1986) from Society of Manufacturing Engineer, University Scholar (1985) and Xerox (1987) from University of Illinois. He is also Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Society of Metals (ASM), Fellow of International Academy of Photonics and Laser Engineering (IAPLE) and Laser Institute of America (LIA) where he was President (2000).

Apart from all his professional accomplishments, he was a wonderful human being who was loved by so many during his life. He leaves behind a legacy of bright engineers throughout the world carrying on his teachings and research spanning decades. He was a dedicated father to his sons, Debashis and Debayan and a loving husband to his wife of 38 years, Aparajita. Professor Mazumder will be deeply missed by his sister, Mithu, his brother in-law Dr. Pronab Sensarma, his nephew, Anirban and many family members, colleagues, students, and friends all over the world who loved him. He always lived by examples and instilled the value of giving best effort to everything you do to his sons. Together, he and his wife Aparajita had an exciting life building their careers, raising their children, traveling the world, and enjoying wonderful moments with his dear ones. Jyoti will be forever loved. May his soul rest in peace.
