GAABESU Initiative for AMPHAN Relief

Dear All ,

Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan was a powerful and deadly tropical Cyclone that caused widespread damage in Eastern India in May 2020.

West Bengal , the epicentre of the cyclone’s landfall, saw the most widespread damage from Amphan. The storm was considered strongest to hit the region in over decades. Nearly 100 people died in West Bengal, most of the fatalities were due to electrocution or the collapse of homes.

The state government estimated that the storm caused at least US$ 13.2 Billion in damage and directly affected 70% of the state’s population. The greatest damage was in the Sundarbans area.

Embankments in the region were overtaken by the surges , leading to inundation of the islands in the Sundarbans . Bridges linking islands to the Indian main land were swept away. In Kolkata, damaging winds uprooted trees and electric poles leaving much of the city without power for long hours. Storm also triggered widespread flooding around the city.

We, from GAABSU decided to join hands with MUKTI, a non-profit socio economic organisation ( working for Sundarban people in the delta region of South 24 Parghanas in West Bengal ) to fulfil our social responsibilities and help the people of West Bengal in this trying time.
