Update on GAABESU activities July-August 2022

GAABESU activities during the period July-August 2022

GAABESU ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2022:

15th Annual General Meeting of GAABESU will be held on 10th September, 2022. Notice has been circulated.

Fund transfer from GAABESU USA to GAABESU INDIA:

Fund transfer from GAABESU USA to GAABESU India has become very difficult now. It came out from a meeting that the current approval from IRS (Internal Revenue Service), USA does not allow the transfer of money to GAABESU India without expressing a specific project to be managed by GAABESU India.  According to the directive of IRS, GAABESU USA Foundation can send that money to BESU (University) only against specific projects identified and managed by GAABESU India

Meeting up administrative expenses:

Due to paucity of funds, it has become difficult to meet the administrative expenses of GAABESU. The total administrative expenses for a year are about Rs. 8 to 10 lakhs. It was decided earlier that GAABESU can take a maximum of 10% administrative charges from any donation except Scholarship. It was decided after discussion in an EC meeting that 10% will be taken from the scholarships, Alumni fellowships and Research award donations.

Update on Membership drive & revision of Sub-committee:

The subcommittee for GAABESU Membership drive has been revised and the EC has approved the same.

Enhancement of All Alumni Database:

GAABESU has a database & a google group email of all GAABESU Members, 3 google groups of nonmember alumni. The President requested all members to collect information i.e., email ID and phone no. from their batchmates / local groups or by personal contacts, so that we can reach out to the maximum number of alumni for any communication.

Selection of Alumni Day 2022 Committee & announcement:

GAABESU will organize this year’s 9th Global Alumni Day on 25th December at IIEST Campus. Alumni Day (2022) Subcommittee was reviewed and confirmed during the 110th EC meeting. The announcement will be circulated shortly.

Travel Grant:

This year, we received the application for the Travel Grant from Ayushman Ghosh, a third-year undergraduate from the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering.  One of his research papers titled, "Signal Quality Assessment of Photoplethysmogram Signals using Quantum Pattern Recognition and Lightweight CNN Architecture", recently got accepted at the prestigious 44th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (IEEE EMBC-EMBS) held at Glasgow, Scotland, UK from 11th to 15th July 2022. The Travel Grant committee sanctioned RS. 30,000/-for this appeal.

NIRF Ranking:

A meeting was held between the GAABESU NIRF committee members (Partha Pratim Chattopadhyay, Sriman Bhattacharyya and Biman Ghosh) and the Institute. GAABESU, through a Survey, requested our alumni to express their interest in supporting IIEST in the mentioned areas - Student, Faculty, Department and Institute.  We received responses from 200 alumni showing their interest to help our Alma Mater in regaining its desired position, not only in the NIRF ranking, but also in the global map of engineering education and research. Based on the survey responses, teams were formed and GAABESU office sent letters to all the interested members to meet in their respective groups, discuss, and start planning on how to support our Institute for enhancing the position of our Alma mater in National and International space.

The Kick-off meetings for all the 4 verticals happened between 15th and 16th August 2022.

A group of alumni also raised an on-line petition, and the same was signed by 4000 alumni, and a memorandum was handed over to the IIEST director by our alumnus Prof. Tathagata Roy (1966 CE) on 12th August 2022.
