The Orientation Programme for the newly admitted undergraduate students of the Academic Session 2026 was held on 21 August 2026 at the IIEST Shibpur campus. Approximately 860 students were admitted across various undergraduate programmes this year. Considering the large number of fresh entrants, the programme was conducted in two batches, with the sessions being held simultaneously in three venues. The main programme took place at the Institute Hall, while two additional seminar halls were used to accommodate all the participants through live telecast. Approximately 650 students attended the orientation programme on the day.

A new integrated programme, BSMS (Integrated B.Sc. – M.Sc.), was introduced this academic year in the disciplines of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Science (Applied Geology).

Inaugural Session

Both sessions commenced with the rendition of the National Song, Vande Mataram, followed by the Invocation, Lighting of the Ceremonial Lamp, and the formal inauguration of the programme.

Highlights of the Addresses

The speakers welcomed the newly admitted students and familiarised them with various aspects of academic and campus life. Their presentations covered the following key topics:

• The rich 170-year heritage and legacy of the Institute and the responsibility of every student to uphold its traditions and values. 
• Academic regulations, curriculum structure and the educational facilities available on the campus. 
• Hostel rules, student discipline and the importance of maintaining a healthy academic environment. 
• The need to preserve the campus as a Green Campus through environmental awareness and adherence to a Zero Waste philosophy. 
• Essential amenities available both within and around the campus, including banks, ATMs, the post office and other public services. 
• Medical facilities, ambulance services and emergency healthcare support available to students. 
• Student welfare initiatives, counselling services and the grievance redressal mechanism available for addressing students' concerns. 
• The importance of mutual respect, inclusiveness, ethical conduct and maintaining a campus environment free from harassment or discrimination. 
• Significant improvements in hostel accommodation. The newly commissioned 10-storeyed Boys' Hostel, with a capacity of approximately 1,160 students, has substantially eased the long-standing shortage of hostel accommodation. Consequently, Hostels 7 to 10, which were previously occupied by second- and third-year students, have been reassigned to accommodate first-year students, while the senior students have been shifted to the new hostel. As a result, all eligible applicants for boys' hostel accommodation have been allotted hostel seats this year, marking a significant improvement after many years. Similar efforts are underway to enhance accommodation for girl students. Wolfenden Hostel is being converted into a dedicated girls' hostel and is expected to become operational from October 2026, which will further strengthen the Institute's residential facilities.
• Prof. Anirban Gupta – Dean (International Relations, Alumni Affairs & Outreach) during his speech he emphasised on the value addition by the Alumni Community and their Association GAABESU. He suggested all the new students to enrol themselves in the Alumni Chapter of the Institute’s website for availing benefits through the very strong Alumni base worldwide. 

Address by the Director

The Hon'ble Director, Prof. V. M. S. R. Murthy, warmly welcomed the fresh students and congratulated them on becoming members of one of India's oldest engineering institutions. He highlighted the academic strengths of the Institute, its research ecosystem, sports and swimming facilities, cultural and extracurricular activities, and encouraged the students to participate actively in all aspects of campus life.

He stressed the importance of discipline, sincerity in academics, teamwork and preserving the rich traditions of the Institute. The Director also informed the students that the Institute is planning to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Training Centre in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) within the campus to provide advanced training opportunities for interested students. He further mentioned that several similar initiatives aimed at enhancing students' technical skills and industry readiness are being planned.

He also mentioned about the significant improvement about the Boy’s hostel accommodation due to the recently inaugurated 10 storeyed hostels. He expressed his happiness as all the applicants for hostel accommodation could be satisfied with this year. 

During his speech, he mentioned about the great impact on the institute through the major contribution by the Institute’s Alumni as well their Alumni Association GAABESU on academic and infrastructural development.   

Address by the President, GAABESU

Shri Amitabha Datta, President of the Global Alumni Association of Bengal Engineering and Science University (GAABESU), addressed the students on behalf of the alumni fraternity.

He emphasised the importance of preserving and carrying forward the glorious legacy of the Institute. He remarked that although the institution has officially been known as Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur since 2014, generations of alumni across the world continue to cherish and identify their alma mater as Bengal Engineering College (B.E. College). He encouraged the students to remember and uphold this heritage throughout their professional careers.

He also highlighted the vast global alumni network and urged the students to remain connected with GAABESU from the very beginning of their academic journey. Students were informed that the GAABESU Office, located at the Institute Guest House, remains accessible for guidance and information regarding scholarships, travel grants for presenting technical papers in India and abroad, alumni mentoring, career guidance, internships, higher studies and research opportunities. He advised the students to make full use of the alumni network throughout their academic and professional lives.

Chief Guest's Address

The Chief Guest, Prof. Sriyankar Acharya, Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), West Bengal, delivered an inspiring motivational address. He encouraged the students to cultivate curiosity, develop strong fundamentals, embrace innovation and continuously strive for excellence in their academic and professional pursuits. He urged them to utilise the opportunities available at IIEST Shibpur to become competent professionals and responsible citizens.

Vote of Thanks

The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Shri Biswajit Bhattacharya, Registrar, IIEST Shibpur, who expressed gratitude to the Director, Chief Guest, distinguished faculty members, alumni representatives, organisers and the newly admitted students for making the Orientation Programme a meaningful and successful event.
